What Matters: Hunger Calls

Hunger calls

With groans ahh my stomach is rumbling

I best not think about it

Otherwise the worst will happen

It will hurt more

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

Out to the children in Ethiopia

Pleading them, begging them

Asking them for food

But they have nothing to give their calling bellies

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

To the poor mothers of dying children across the world

Wondering if they have any morsels of food

But the poor mothers have nothing

Just hope that their children will live until the next day

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

To the weak and frail fathers unable to provide for their families

Walking for miles in search of something

But they only have blisters to show

And nothing to fill their bloated bellies

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

To the children experiencing poverty

Making our big brand shoes in sweatshops

Earning only a few dollars to support their family

Yet the western world pays hundreds of dollars for shoes

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

From the belly of the little kindergarten girl

Having nothing in her lunchbox

And hoping that no one will see

Because she can't stand another day of teasing

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

From the homeless man in Martin Place

Hoping for some charity - can he hear a food van?

No

It is just a garbage truck driving through the streets

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

As the unemployed father

Makes baked beans on toast for his two kids

Whilst he skips his third dinner for the week

Hoping he will soon get a call for the job he applied for

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

To the new year 6 girl

Who is not even the average size of an eight year old

And after years of neglect, feels as though she is the odd one out

As everyone looks at her in disgust wondering if she is anorexic

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

To the white-haired grandfather

Too frail to shop for food

Whose family has forgotten him as they keep up with the rat race

Whilst he suffers malnutrition

And the ongoing hunger calls

Hunger calls

With groans ahh my stomach is rumbling

I best not think about it

Otherwise the worst will happen

It will hurt more

And the ongoing hunger calls.

When will this ever end? Hunger calls...
