Chances Blow With the Wind

SCARLETT YORK

Hunter Valley Grammar School

The blood, sweat and tears slowly fade as the top of the mountain picks its tired eyes over the ombre horizon. The splashes of baby pink and dangerous orange collide and feed on each other. To create a once in a lifetime opportunity. To witness the beauty of the sky that won't have the same colours and mix as another sunset.

The old man slowly bends down to the cold crisp water filled lake and places his naked and bare hand through it, absorbing the energy. His vision slowly fades and his hearing is rusty but this touch is one thing he will never feel again.

The midwife takes the baby and gently sways allowing the tiny newborn to rest after a hard surgery. She knows she will never see this baby again, nor one like it. Wanting to be absolutely certain that everything is ok with the tender body. The only thing she can do is pass this baby to trustworthy hands. She is grateful for this once in a lifetime chance.

Captivated in the pool of thought, the young girl writes about the calming breeze. The window is open before her desk and the draft squeezes through the opening. This breeze is one of a kind. Hard to describe but the slow sway is like cool arms wrapping around you. Resting everything and calming the crazy world. The wind is never the same as the blow before. The chance is different every time.

The black night sky is as though a little alien has pulled parts away from the other 'side'. Tiny specks from out of our small galaxy appear allowing light to shine through. Stars. This was what the little boy and girl shared. They knew these stars will never be the same again. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. To spend together.

This is what matters, the chances we get at a variety of opportunities and moments in time that we collect. I am amazed at how many people let them slip through their fingertips. Losing the chance and then dreaming what it would be like later on. I know that if there is something new to try I would grasp it and not let it go. So why do so many humans not even try? I know that effort is the problem. Like attempting is too hard. But all you have to do is take the risk. Work hard and TRY!
