Masterclass: Contemporary Voices in Multicultural Australia


Join Australia’s leading contemporary Muslim voices in a discussion about multicultural Australia and how to be a positive voice for social change in 2016.

The Whitlam Institute is proud to partner with the United States Consulate General Sydney for this event. The Masterclass series is brought to you by the US Consulate and focuses on contemporary issues in Australia and America. Refreshments will be served from 6pm. The masterclass starts at 6:30pm.

Amna Karra-Hassan is a social justice advocate, footy fanatic, and champion for the inclusion of girls and women. She was part of the #myABC campaign, SBS Identity series promotion and many more media stories. Amna works for the Australian Federal Police in Community Engagement. In this time, she discovered AFL and established the first Western Sydney Women’s team, the Auburn Giants. Amna uses her strong links with community to change the conversation on the traditional ideas of gender and the role of women.

Jihad Dib is the Member for Lakemba and the Shadow Minister for Education. He is the state’s first lower house Muslim MP in the NSW Parliament. At the age of 33, Jihad Dib was appointed to lead Punchbowl Boys' High School; a school that had been on the verge of closure. Under his leadership, the school made highly significant and externally recognised improvements in educational and social outcomes for students and the school community through a systematic and practical approach to educational reform.

Osman Faruqi is the News and Politics Editor at Junkee. Osman is a former political staffer and is now a writer and broadcaster and has featured on Triple J, The Guardian, Meanjin and ABC The Drum.
