Young people tell us What Matters to them
Young people tell us What Matters to them
The Whitlam Institute 2009 What Matters writing competition for primary and secondary school students across NSW and the ACT is now underway. This annual essay competition is a highlight of the Institute's calendar. Last year over 850 entries were received from young people who articulated what matters to them across a broad range of social, family, environmental, human rights and community issues. Choosing the category winners is never an easy task given the array of talent and insight shown by our young writers.
All finalists receive a cash prize awarded at a ceremony held at the Parramatta campus of the University of Western Sydney, attended by the Hon Gough Whitlam AC QC, competition patron Mr Hugh Mackay and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid AM. Additionally, all finalists are offered the opportunity to attend a creative writing workshop. The year 11/12 category winner will also be invited to contribute to the ActNow's Cash for Comments writing program receiving professional training and the opportunity to be paid for their work.
The competition this year is being sponsored by Officeworks who are also donating five prizes of $1000 each for schools participating in the competition. The prizes will be drawn at the awards ceremony to be held on 4 June 2009.
