Institute moves into historic building

The Whitlam Institute has moved into the heritage listed Medical Superintendent's Cottage on the UWS Parramatta campus.

The Medical Superintendent's Cottage, upstairs from the Whitlam Prime Ministerial Collection is on the UWS Parramatta campus in the historical precinct of the University.

This building was constructed around 1868-1870 to house the matron or master of the Female Orphans' School when space was needed for new dormitories. It was originally a single story building and a coach house and stables were built between the house and the river in 1892, however these were later demolished.

When the orphanage was closed, the Medical Superintendent of the mental health hospital lived in the house and it was briefly used as a psychiatric ward until the hospital was closed in the late 1980s. The university campus opened in 1998.
