What Matters? Essay competition winners – May 7

The young people this year wrote on a diverse range of topics: wildlife, discrimination and the need for tolerance, their friends, global warming, bullying, their families, and more. We've had a wonderful time here reading all their enthusiastic and passionate responses to the question of what matters to them.

The judges again had a difficult task.

This year's essays were judged by alpanel of prominent writers and journalists: award winning author Emily Rodda; crime novelist Professor Jane Goodall, from the UWS Writing and Society Research Group; Julie Hare, Editor in Chief, APN Educational Media, Sydney Morning Herald journalist and author Andrew West; and Eric Brace from the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

The winners were announced at a special awards ceremony. Gough Whitlam was present to present the awards and Hugh McKay, What Matters patron, delivered a brief address. The young people came to the restored Female Orphan School at the UWS Parramatta campus to be presented with their prizes.

One school fielded three winners in this year's awards. To find out which school it was check our website in the next week as we will be posting all the winning entries for you to read plus photos of the day.
