In April 1945 the Chifley Government had sent Jessie Street as an adviser to the UN Conference in San Francisco. She secured the insertion of the word 'sex' in the clause 'without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion' wherever that clause occurs in the United Nations Charter signed in June 1945. NSW Teachers of Modern Greek Association
Philhellenes and philologists
The ancient Greek gods are alive and well. Athena and Phevos will make the awards at to-day's ceremony in Bankstown. Last year their images presided over the splendid Olympics in Athens. Throughout Australia the Governor-General makes more and more appearances as Zeus to express his omnipotence. A generation ago a Governor-General whom I had chosen made an unforgettable appearance as Bacchus to present the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in Victoria. [More...]

Prime Minister's Weekly Broadcast the Constitutional Crisis
I've been astonished in recent days by the flood of messages and telegrams which have come to my office in support of our stand against the latest abuse of power by the Opposition. Rarely have I seen such a massive and spontaneous demonstration of feeling on any political issue. Australians have been roused to anger by the actions of the Opposition in the Senate in the past week. The Opposition has embarked on a course which imperils the foundations of our democratic system and threatens the whole nation with chaos. [More...]
