30 years since the Federal Parliament's joint sitting of 1974

August 2004 sees the 30th anniversary of the only joint sitting held under the deadlocks section (s.57) of the Australian Constitution. Scott Bennett looks at the political intrigues of 1974 and examines the resultant boost to Prime Ministerial power which endures to this day.


Student writing competition on What Matters?

What Matters? presented by the Whitlam Institute, The Sun-Herald and the Sydney Morning Herald is a news writing competition for students in Years 5-12 in NSW and the ACT. Winners were presented with their awards on 21 August by Nobel prize winning author J.M. Coetzee and Gough Whitlam. Winning essays are here on the Whitlam website.

New Executive Director for the Whitlam Institute

Jacqueline Woodman is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Whitlam Institute. Jacqueline has dedicated her career to the pursuit of social justice, and equal access to opportunity and quality of life. Prior to joining The Whitlam Institute she was Director of the European Network on Debt and Development, Europe’s leading peak body of some 50 non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) committed to fair and just international debt and poverty reduction policies.
