Whitlam Institute launches literacy project in Western Sydney

The Whitlam Institute, the NSW Department of Education and the Sun Herald have launched a literacy project which will put University of Western Sydney education students into selected primary schools in 2004 to help boost reading skills.


New forces shaping local neighbourhoods

Australian City neighbourhoods are increasingly divided and demarcated. Debate over what this means for public policy has just begun. The ‘State of Australian Cities’ conference was held in December. Community service and Australian values

Australia Day ambassador Andrew West floats his vision for a National Community Service force. Inspired by J. F. Kennedy’s Peace Corps he says that national values would be enriched if all Australians between 18 and 25 spent one year of their lives giving back to their local communities or representing their country overseas.


Deed of Gift starts transfer of the Whitlam Papers to Parramatta

Gough Whitlam's private library was deeded to the Whitlam Institute on 10 December 2003. Many papers have been digitised already and are available to all on this website. The Deed of Gift will bring Gough's original papers to Parramatta where they will be open to the public.


1973 Whitlam cabinet papers released with expanded e-collection

New Year's Day 2004 marked the National Archives of Australia (NAA) release of the 1973 Whitlam cabinet papers. The NAA's selected cabinet papers reveal the inside story of a turning point in Australian political history. Also this New Year the Whitlam Institute's e-collection expands with the release of Gough's personal papers for the final months of 1973 - start here with August 1973.
