Jeff Richardson calls for solidarity on health values

We are often told there is a trade-off between social values and efficiency. In his special address at the inaugural Whitlam Institute Health Forum, Jeff Richardson observes this is not necessarily the case. Achieving the wrong objectives is not efficient, he says. When we come to micro-economic evaluation many of the goals of social justice are difficult to debate because we do not have the vocabulary - and the lack of such a vocabulary is extremely coercive. Jeff's wide and deep exploration of Medicare policy follows.

Health debate needs patient focus and empirical rigour

For the first time in 20 years, significant changes are being signalled for Medicare as the Federal Government pursues a fundamental restructure. Mary Foley comments on the proceedings of the Inaugural Whitlam Institute Health Forum as a leading Hospital administrator and shows us how the impact of technology has rendered the public vs private debate irrelevant.

Online Forum launched on health policy

This month the Whitlam Institute launches its first online forum, providing community access to an open discussion of future directions for Australian health policy. Get the facts and have your say on health.

John Deeble exposes the false crisis in Medicare

Speaking at the inaugural Whitlam Institute Forum on Health, one of the fathers of Medicare, Professor Deeble, outlines the myths and lies about universal health cover. He calls for a Medicare review but concludes that in reality no other system could have coped with the explosion of costs of medical technology that we have experienced.
