Life of Gough celebrations report
The Life of Gough dinner celebrated the 30th anniversary of Gough becoming Prime Minister of Australia on 2 December 1972 and 50 years since he entered public life as the Member for Werriwa on 29 November 1952. Here is your record of the evening.
The Whitlam Government and Constitutional Reform
Featured columnist this edition is the Anthony Mason Professor and Director of the Gilbert and Tobin Centre of Public Law, George Williams. His paper stakes out an agenda for revival of constitutional reform action which is inspired by the ongoing campaign waged by E.G.W.
Australian Values and the War Against Terrorism
The Government’s response to September 11 has produced some of the most controversial legislation ever introduced into federal Parliament. George Williams' Australia Day 2003 address to the National Press Club says it gives insufficient regard to Australian values. Menzies got it wrong with his anti-communist legislation. So has the Government today with its ASIO Bill.
The Relevance of the Whitlam Government Today
Gough marks 30 years since the election of his Government with a broad critique of our political history, including comments on refugee policy and the Tampa. He said in part: "Throughout my public life, I have tried to apply an overarching principle and a unifying theme to all my work. It can be stated in two words: contemporary relevance."
Inaugural Media Conference, Mascot airport 1972
New to the e-collection this month is the text of Gough's first media conference as Prime Minister elect, together with press releases issued during the first 11 days of Whitlam Government when 54 decisions were made.
