As Tom Uren observed at the opening of our Letter of Passion exhibition two weeks ago, the Australian people have taken Gough and Margaret Whitlam into their hearts. Gough is a wonderful friend of the University of Western Sydney, the people of Western Sydney and of course the Whitlam Institute. As the Prime Ministerial collection shows, Gough continues to make an active contribution. He still gives up to 40 speeches a year. Each is meticiously researched and always carries a plethora of amazing facts and figures.

We hope that you will join with us in wishing Mr. Whitlam the happiest returns.Of course, Mr. Whitlam was there on Monday 8 July when Richie Ahmat gave his historic speech on a treaty between black and white Australians to the "Learning from the Past, Thinking about the Future conference on partnerships between Indigenous Australia and the Philanthropic and Corporate Community. As he was leaving, late in the evening, Fleur Spitzer approached Mr. Whitlam and said 'I just want to say Mr. Whitlam thank you'. Fleur carried a sentiment that all of us would like Mr and Mrs. Whitlam to feel today.

Birthday additions to the web site

This month we have been looking at the processes involved in getting the next instalment of Mr. Whitlam's speeches on-line.

The speeches begin 12 November 1986 at the Australian Council of Local Government Associations Conference in Adelaide. The address with Hon Tom Uren was given to us in its original format typed by Gough's secretary Elaine Haigh. All 31 pages of the original speech have been retyped by Christine St Anne, our latest addition to the team. This speech and many others from the late 80's will be featuring on-line in the coming months.
