Whitlam: In his own words

Whitlam: In his own words

by Hon E.G. Whitlam, AC QC

NSW Parliament House, 30 October 2002 1500 hours

This audio-visual spectacular results from three full days of interrogation on 8-10 April 2002 by John Faulkner. At 86, it's rather exhausting. I can understand why Faulkner is one of the most effective politicians in committee and in parliament in Australia. The good thing about John is he didn't go 'overboard'. This is a very good documentary.

After 18 hours in the dock I had to come directly to this very building (the Jubilee Room) to be the inaugural donor to Australia's first brain bank.

Whitlam: In his own words covers the reasons I went into public life, reform of the Labor Party, the importance of policy development and the achievements of the three years of the Whitlam Government. I particularly commend the archival production associated with the documentary. My Government established the Australian Film and Television School and Australian Film Commission. Almost three decades later I realise that they were excellent decisions. I hope this excellent production finds its way into the homes, universities and schools across Australia.

I would like to extend thanks to:

  • Forensic Faulkner and his assistant Ashley Hogan.
  • Producer and Director Rob Francis and his talented production team.
  • Stephen Grant and Bridget Pirrie, whose home provides the background (John and I take most of the foreground).
  • Mary Valentine and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for providing a magnificent soundtrack. Margaret and I have subscribed for many years.
  • SBS Television and the Film Finance Corporation.

May it be crowned with a Logie.
